I am also trained in Satir Family Systems level 1 and 2, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy and Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy. However, I have found the most beneficial therapies in my practice are a combination of IFS and EMDR.
Have you ever found yourself saying "a part of me feels X way but another part of me feels a different way"? Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy focuses on understanding and healing the different parts of an individual's internal system. It views the mind as a collection of various subpersonalities or "parts" that each have their own unique thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. These parts can sometimes conflict with one another, leading to emotional distress and problematic behaviors.
IFS therapy aims to develop a compassionate and curious relationship with their internal parts. The therapist guides the person in exploring and understanding the roles and intentions of each part, as well as the underlying emotions and experiences associated with them. By doing so, individuals can gain insight into their internal dynamics and work towards resolving conflicts and achieving greater harmony within themselves.
This therapy can be beneficial for individuals dealing with a wide range of issues, including trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and self-esteem issues. By identifying and addressing the needs of different parts, IFS therapy can help individuals develop self-compassion, self-awareness, and emotional regulation skills. It also promotes personal growth and empowers individuals to make healthier choices aligned with their core values.
You can find a more in depth explanation of IFS therapy in my article here.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy that can be beneficial for individuals dealing with trauma, chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. It helps by targeting the distressing memories and experiences that contribute to these conditions through bilateral stimulation helping to regulate the nervous system and reprocess the traumatic experience in the brain. This in turn reduces the physical and psychological distress associated with these memories. People typically find that through EMDR sessions, experiences related to the traumatic memory are not as distressing as prior to EMDR sessions.
I typically integrate EMDR sessions with Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. As IFS therapy focuses on understanding and harmonizing different parts of oneself, EMDR targets specific traumatic memories that these parts may hold. By combining these approaches, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of their internal dynamics and work towards resolving trauma-related issues.
The integration of EMDR and IFS therapy allows for a more holistic and personalized treatment approach. It can help people address the root causes of their trauma, anxiety, and depression, leading to improved emotional well-being and a greater sense of self and self-compassion.
